What it is
The placement.
| The firm | Thomas Philip Advocates and Solicitors, a civil litigation firm in Kuala Lumpur. It has trained law students since 2010. It does not do criminal work, so the matters are commercial and civil disputes. |
| Length | Four weeks, with intakes every month. Longer or custom placements, including part time alongside a semester in Kuala Lumpur, are quoted before you commit. |
| The work | Live civil files with a mentor at the firm: research, drafting, bundles, chronologies, and sitting in on conferences. |
| Court | Twice a week, with the lawyer running the matter, plus the Court Museum at the Court of Appeal and the court libraries. |
| Also included | A day in Putrajaya, a legal seminar and skills workshops, Malay lessons twice a week, weekend trips to Malacca, Batu Caves and Port Dickson. Time with an NGO or legal aid initiative is available on request, depending on what is running while you are there. |
| What you leave with | A short written comparison of a point of Malaysian and Australian law, and a different understanding of how another common law system works. |
Money
What it costs.
| Fee | $2,900 AUD for 2026 intakes. The usual fee is $3,900. | $2,900 |
| Included | The placement, a private apartment of your own about ten minutes from the firm, breakfast and lunch on working days, a driver to and from the firm where available, airport transfers, Malay lessons, the weekend trips, a pre departure briefing, orientation, a debrief and a certificate. | |
| Not included | Flights, travel insurance (compulsory), dinners and weekend meals, personal spending. | |
| To hold a place | A $500 AUD deposit, which comes off the fee. There is also a $200 AUD accommodation bond, refunded after the placement if there is no damage. | |
| If it does not go ahead | If we cannot confirm a placement, everything paid is refunded. If you decide not to go after the safety conversation we hold before confirming, everything paid is refunded. The full position is on the cancellation policy page. |
Your university
Two questions to ask this week.
- Your faculty: would this count for credit, or towards a practical experience requirement? Each faculty decides for itself, so ask early and bring this page.
- Your mobility office: could a mobility grant cover a placement like this one? Some grants do and some do not. We do not claim the programme is New Colombo Plan approved, and you should not either.

Practical
Before you go.
| Entry | We confirm the correct entry arrangement with every student before flights are booked. Australian passport holders also complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card in the three days before arriving. Other passports have their own rules, so check the Immigration Department of Malaysia’s own website. |
| Flights | About eight hours direct from Melbourne, similar or shorter from Sydney and Perth. Book a return or onward flight before you travel. |
| Dress | Business attire, business casual on Fridays. Bring something you can sit in comfortably in a warm courtroom. |
| Ramadan | February and March intakes overlap it and the placement still runs. Dates are on the Kuala Lumpur guide. |
| While you are there | Someone from Lawgistics is reachable for the whole four weeks. |
